First day of the second week of cycling. I can't really believe that I already have been touring a week on the bike. So far it has been a great experience. Since I haven't been in New Hampshire, Vermont or New York state before, I didn't know what to expect. But I have to say, everywhere so far was just beautiful, although the weather wasn't really the best during this first week. I definitely could imagine coming back here.

Today I got an early start again, so I don't arrive too late in Newark,NY and have some time to relax after I arrive. My fourth day in New York started out cloudy again but as the day progressed the sky cleared and it was nice and sunny. So from that perspective it was a really nice ride. I expected it to be quite a flat route today, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. I didn't really gain any altitude during the day, but during the whole day there were short and steep climbs to master. Especially with all the weight on the bike, this can be challenging and after a while this really takes your energy away. When studying the route beforehand, it looked more or less flat for the day.

Again I followed the the Northern Tier route for most of the day, staying on smaller roads and avoiding traffic. I left the Northern Tier route after I reached Sodus Point at Lake Ontario. The Northern Tier route would have stayed by Lake Ontario for a little longer and than south to Palmyra. But since I couldn't find a suitable accommodation in Palmyra, I went straight south from Sodus Point to Lyons and than along the Erie Canal Trail to Newark. This means I will have to cover a few extra miles tomorrow to reach Medina,NY, but that should be okay.

Today's route manly went through farmland, along fruit farms, the occasional winery and small towns along the way until I reached Sodus Point about at noon. Sodus Point is situated right by Lake Ontario and since it was lunch time I had a sandwich by the Lake. Lake Ontario is just amazing, the pure size of it. It it is hard to imagine that your really at the shore of a lake and not by the sea. After Lake Ontario I went south again through farmland until I reached the Erie canal and went for the last few miles along the canal on the Erie Canal Trail. All in all a nice ride.

I had a perfect end to the day. After a bit of rest at the hotel, I went to a nice little pub next to the hotel. They had a great choice of craft beers from New York and I had my first Bison burger. Both, the beer and the burger were really tastful.

Conclusion for the day:

Just because the map tells you that the route is flat, it doesn't mean that it's actually the case.
