Day 7 – Long Lake,NY to Boonville,NY

Date: 05.05.2018
Altitude: 3720.5ft (1134 m)
Distance: 76.45 mi (123.03 km)
Total Altitude: 19498.0 ft (5943 m)
Total Distance: 368.54 mi (593.11 km)

My second day on the Northern Tier route and I had to start the day without breakfast. The storm last night in Long Lake led to an power outage in town. The power already went out in the evening and was still gone in the morning. For that reason I wasn't able to update my blog last night, because no power also means no WiFi. Since I couldn't get any breakfast in town I just ate a few granola bars and got started for the day. The plan was, to get some “real” food as soon as I could find a nice place. I eventually found a nice place after about 37 mi (60 km) in the town of Inlet. At that point I probably would have eaten just about anything, as long as it wasn't another granola bar. Since it was about the halfway point of today's route, it was the perfect timing to get some food anyway.

Today was going to be a long day, so I was aiming again for an early start. Since there was no breakfast, I got even an earlier start than expected. When I started in the morning it was still quite cold and cloudy but as the day progressed the sun came out and it started to get warmer. In contrast to yesterday I only had one longer climb in the beginning of the day and the rest of the day was kind of a constant up and down. So it wasn't easy to find a rhythm, which made it quite hard after a while. Today's route continued through the Adirondacks almost for the entire day and I stayed on less frequented state highways, so this made it easy to ride and I didn't always had to watch out for the cars. I left the the Adirondacks, a few miles before I reached Boonville,NY.

The scenery was similar to yesterday and mainly going through forests. For the whole day it seemed like there was always water around, either a river or a lake. I passed so many lakes today, I can't even count them. Again there was still quite a lot of snow in the woods and some of the lakes had still ice on them. All in all, it was just an amazing ride again, today. After today, my legs feel even more tired than yesterday and I still a few long days ahead of me, before I want to do my first rest day in Niagara Falls. Lets see how the next few days go. It should get a bit easier, since supposedly there is not as much up and down during the next few days.

Conclusion for the day:

Many short ascents and descents are way worse than a long climb.
