Day 10 – Newark,NY to Medina,NY

Date: 08.05.2018
Altitude: 610.2 ft (186 m)
Distance: 80.82 mi (130.06 km)
Total Altitude: 26059.7 ft (7943 m)
Total Distance: 590.05 mi (949.59 km)

Today I had to cover quite a distance, with a few miles more (about 10 mi) than originally planed because I chose yesterday to finish in Newark instead of Palmyra. But this was okay, especially because it was so nice outside, the sun was shining the whole day. Still I started the day early to cover the distance and arrive as early as possible in Medina,NY.

The route today was completely flat, the first time on my trip. So there were no climbs but also no descents, meaning I had to pedal for the whole 80 miles. Besides the route being completely flat, I didn't had to deal with any traffic. During the the whole day I stayed on the Canalway trail, a trail running besides the Erie Canal. The trail is closed for motorized traffic. This was nice for a change, not having to worry about cars or trucks coming up from behind. Since I stayed on the Canalway trail, the Canal was by my side all the way to Medina. On the route there were quite a few draw bridges and small towns. I also passed by Rochester, but I was glad that I could stay on the trail and didn't have to ride through the city. When I arrived in Medina I was completely covered in dust, so was my bike and the panniers, because most of the trail was unpaved and consisted of compacted gravel. So I was more than happy to find a rainfall shower in my hotel room. What a treat after this day.

In the evening when I went out for dinner, I noticed that there was music playing on the street. The music didn't come from a bar or store, there are speakers attached to the lamp posts and the music came from there. I have never seen something like this before. I walked around for a bit and decided to go to the local Diner, since there wasn't much choice. I was quite hungry after the day, thus I went for the largest burger on their menu. They told me after I ordered that if I finish it, my name will go up on the wall. So if your ever in Medina,NY go to Rudy's Diner and check out if you can find my name on the wall. Just a perfect end to the day.

Conclusion for the day:

Cycling can be pretty dirty sometimes!

  1. The route looks really beautiful at the moment! Do you have a photo of the burger, which brought you to the wall of fame? Is still everything fine with your knee?

    1. Hi Johannes,
I didn't think about taking a picture. I think you just have to go to Medina and check it out, but it wasn't that big. The knee is fine while on the bike, it hurts a bit while walking. After a bit of stretching and a good night's sleep usually everything is fine again.
      Greetings
