Today
I got up early, in order to finally get an early start. After a short
breakfast I managed to be on the road already by 8am. And how could
it be any other way, it was raining again. It continued to rain until
about noon, but stayed cloudy afterwards. The weather forecast
predicted some severe thunderstorms for the area but fortunately
there were no thunderstorms during the day. In the evening, after I
had already checked in the hotel, the weather got way worse, the wind
picked up and heavy rain started falling. I wouldn't want to be
caught in that kind of weather. One thing I can say so far is that
the investment in the new rain gear was worth every cent.
Besides
the bad weather, today's trip went again through some beautiful
nature and led me from Ticonderoga westwards to Long Lake through the
Adirondacks, a state park in New York. Today's route
was actually the first day on the Northern Tier route. The route went
almost constantly (or at least it seemed that way) uphill through
forests, along rivers and lakes. Always staying on smaller roads, so
there was just limited traffic. The higher I got, the more snow I
could still see on the side of the road in the woods and some lakes
were still partially frozen. This was a bit of a surprise for me,
since it wasn't even that high an altitude. I guess, I shouldn't have
started my trip any earlier. On the last few miles of the day I was
able to relax a bit, because from here on it just went downhill to
Long Lake a small town right at a lake. I checked in the only Hotel
in town that was already open, the rest of the hotels didn't open
before the middle/end of may. I guess the lake season hasn't started
yet. There was a nice little bar in the hotel, so I got something to
eat and a few local IPA's there, to end a nice day (except for the
weather). I have to say, at the end of the day I was quite exhausted
and my legs are starting to feel a bit sore. Maybe I need a rest day,
let's see how the next day go's.
Conclusion
for the day:
There
is no bad weather, just bad clothing.
