Day 5 – Rutland,VT to Ticonderoga,NY

Date: 03.05.2018
Altitude: 2919.9 ft (890 m)
Distance: 53.91 mi (86.76 km)
Total Altitude: 11066.2 ft (3373 m)
Total Distance: 228.47 mi (367.70 km)

Today I cycled the last few miles in Vermont and crossed into New York, the fourth state on my trip. Again I didn't see any sign indicating that I entered New York or left Vermont, I guess there are only signs on the major roads or I'm just blind. So the Vermont state sign remains the only one I could photograph.

Since there was a Denny's right next to the Motel, I decided to skip the Motel breakfast and instead ate there. I decided to go all in with scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, hash browns, pancakes and of course coffee, to have the perfect start to the day. After I was finished with breakfast it was again already quite late. I just can't seem to manage an early start. Just as I got started on my tour, it began to pour down and continued raining at least until noon and stayed cloudy with some light rain after that. I guess one day of sun must have been enough. At least if there is no sun I can't get a sunburn.

In the first half of today's trip I stayed on smaller country roads, westbound more or less running parallel to highway US4. The scenery on this part of the route was quite similar to the last two days with some beautiful small towns. In contrast to the last two days, I didn't have to do as much uphill, for the first half of the trip that is. When I reached Dresden,NY I turned north on NY 22 in the direction of Ticonderoga,NY, the destination of today's trip. In Dresden I also entered the Adirondacks and the uphill cycling started again, all the way to Ticonderoga. After I reached Ticonderoga, the search for a Motel room began. After I reached the first Motel, I was told that there are no vacancy's and he didn't just mean his motel but in the whole area, due to fact that William Shatner was in town and the paper mill is being refurbished, so that almost all the rooms are taken up by the workers. I was really discouraged, because I just didn't want to keep going. He then suggested I should ask at the Best Western, maybe they still have a room. When I reached the Best Western, they indeed had a room left, but of course for an outrages price. But I guess, beggars can't be choosers and at least I had a place to spend the night. Camping wasn't really an option for me, since thunderstorms were predicted for the night.

Conclusion for the day:

The best start to the day is with a full breakfast.
