Day 22 – Monticello,IN to Watseka,IL

Date: 20.05.2018
Altitude: 564.3 ft (172 m)
Distance: 75.50 mi (121.50 km)
Total Altitude: 38225.0 ft (11651 m)
Total Distance: 1350.67 mi (2173.69 km)

Today I left Indiana and entered Illinois. But I did not only enter into the 8th state (+Ontario) on my journey, I also entered a new timezone. So from now on, there are seven hours time difference between Germany and myself. If you wonder where the picture of the Illinois state sign is, there is no picture. On the road, I crossed over the state line, there wasn't any sign. I still have the chance to get a picture of the sign as soon as I enter Iowa. Let's see if I have more luck then.
(Update: I got the picture going into Iowa)

Since I got an extra hour today, because of the change in the timezone I didn't need to leave quite as early. So I got to sleep a bit longer and took some more time for breakfast this morning. When I finally got started this morning, the weather wasn't all that great. It was quite similar to yesterday, with thick clouds hanging in the sky and in general quite hazy. Still the temperatures were great for cycling and it stayed dry throughout the day. So it was still a good ride.

Today's ride was pretty uneventful. I was cycling again through farmland the whole day, with the exception of the first few miles when I was leaving Monticello,IN to get back on the Northern Tier route. On my way back to the Northern Tier route, I went for a while back on the same route I took yesterday to get into Monticello. The route stayed again on small county roads with almost no traffic. For the most time I had the road for myself. Staying for the most part on small county roads, I only passed through one town during the day, until I reached Watseka,IL at the end of the day. I passed through Brook around noon, so I did buy something to eat and a Gatorade at the gas station. Perfect timing to reach the only town on today's route. Afterwards I continued on small road's to Watseka. To get to Watseka, I had to leave the Northern Tier route again. In general today was quite a solitary day.

Conclusion for the day:

Some day's on the road can be quite solitary.
