Another
challenging day on US2 and the Montana Hi-Line. Today was probably
one of the hardest days so far on the trip. Not that I had to cover a
really long distance or overcome long climbs, but the wind made the
day really tough. Just like yesterday, it was a beautiful day to be
outside. But the wind picked up in comparison to yesterday and this
strong headwind made the ride tough. I probably have to deal with
similar winds tomorrow again. I'm still fortunate that I didn't had
to many days with headwinds on this trip so far. I would have
expected, that I have to deal with more headwinds, especially
traveling from east to west.
I
was still quite tired when I got started this morning, since the
Motel was close to the train tracks and during the whole night trains
were driving by, sounding their horn. So I really needed some coffee
this morning. Since the Motel didn't offer breakfast I went to the
diner in town to get breakfast. I really like these small town
diners. After breakfast I started on my route for today. The scenery
and terrain were similar to yesterday. There was again a constant
increase in altitude throughout the day and I gained about 850 feet.
After all this increase in altitude through the last couple days,
I'm now already at about 3870 feet (1180m). I enjoyed most of today's
route on US2, except for about 12 miles. On US2 between Chester and
Shelby, there were two major road constructions. The first one was no
fun on a bike, the road was torn up for about 12 miles which made for
a terrible ride. The second one was okay, because they were almost
finished and had already applied a new surface. I was not surprised
by the road construction, since the guy at the motel already warned
me this morning. While I was waiting at the first construction side
for the piloting car, the guy in the car in front of me got out of
his car and talked a bit to me. A bit later the guy in the truck
behind me offered to take me and my bike through the construction
zone. I had to decline his offer, since I want to do the whole trip
on my bike. Later in the construction zone I wished I would have
taken him up on his offer, but I made it. Still I think it is great
that people offering to help.
Conclusion
for the day:
