Another
day on the Hi-Line in Montana, staying on US2 and following the
railroad. Throughout the day I was accompanied by incredibly long
cargo trains the occasional Amtrak train and their horns. And it was
a really nice day to be out on the bike again. The sun was shining
throughout the day. There was also a slight headwind during the day.
So this made it a bit more challenging, even with the shorter
distance I had to cover, today.
I
started on my route in Havre after a typical hotel breakfast. The
scenery today, didn't change a whole lot in comparison to the last
few days. Throughout the day there was a constant increase in
altitude. In comparison to yesterday, the increase in altitude was
not as gentle and I gained about 1000 feet during the day. The gain
in altitude in combination with the headwind made it actually more
demanding than the 90 miles yesterday. Still I enjoyed most of the
ride on US2 except for the the few miles on US2 where the rumble
strips covered the whole shoulder. Not using the shoulder was not
really an option, because of the traffic.
After
I didn't see any fellow traveling cyclist yesterday, I met a few
today. First I met a couple riding the Northern Tier from east to
west. I only chatted with them for a short while, since they wanted
to keep going. Only a few miles behind them I met a woman doing the
Northern Tier on her own. She was doing the trip on her own and took
her time, she wasn't in a rush to complete the route. Up until now,
she was already on the road for a month, I will probably only need
two weeks for the same distance. For me it is actually hard to
imagine that I will reach the Pacific in about two weeks, if
everything goes according to plan. Perhaps I will stretch that out a
bit, and get a few rest days in, if I like it someplace. It was nice
to meet some other cyclist. I hope I get to meet some more, during
the next weeks. It would be really nice to meet someone that is going
west as well.
Conclusion
for the day:
Rumble
strips are terrible, when you are on a bike.
