Day 53 – Malta,MT to Havre,MT

Date: 20.06.2018
Altitude: 757.9 ft (231 m)
Distance: 91.75 mi (147.65 km)
Total Altitude: 88395.7 ft (26943 m)
Total Distance: 3574.45 mi (5752.60 km)

Today was a sunny day, but it wasn't too warm. The temperature was perfect for being out on the bike and it was a long day on the road. After all these shorter days in Montana so far, today was the first long day on the road in a while. For the 90 miles today, I didn't have any tailwind but there was also no real headwind. The wind came majorly from the south, so it didn't impact me too much. Although I had to cover a long distance, the ride wasn't too hard. The terrain was almost flat, there was only a gentle increase in altitude throughout the day. All in all I gained only about 328 feet (100m) during the day.

Due to the long distance I got an early start today. I hit the road after watching the first half of
Portugal against Morocco and a good breakfast at the hotel. The day was again quite uneventful and even with the longer distance similar to the last few days. There wasn't really a change in the scenery. The only time the scenery changed a bit was when I left US2 for a few miles in the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. Here the route went for a while along a river. The rest of the day I stayed just like yesterday on US2. The shoulder on US2 was again quite erratic, from wide shoulders to no shoulder at all everything was there. In places with wide shoulders it was a good ride, but in places with no shoulder I didn't enjoy the ride too much since I was passed quite narrowly by cars and trucks. I'm really looking forward to a change in scenery, after a while it is just getting boring. On a positive note, the insect repellent worked great and I didn't had a problem with Mosquitoes, today. Unfortunately a day to late, my legs are just covered in Mosquito bites after yesterday. I should have gotten some insect repellent earlier.

Conclusion for the day:

It is amazing that after about 50 days on the road, a 90 mile day doesn't really present a challenge to me anymore.
