Back on the bike after the rest day, yesterday. It took me a while to get back in the groove again, but my legs felt good and I could tell I had some more energy after the rest day. It was a great day to be back on the bike, the sun was shining the whole day and still it wasn't too hot. The wind wasn't too much of a problem, since it was coming predominantly from the south. Only later in the day when the wind increased a bit and came more from the southwest, the wind started to play a role.

The day started with a great breakfast at the hotel, with fresh made omelet and lots of other stuff. Especially today it was good to have a good breakfast and plenty, since there was no place along the way to get something for lunch. So breakfast got me through the day. After I left Bismarck I stayed the whole day on CR 139. There was no shoulder but there was not a whole lot of traffic. The Northern Tier route would actually have gone on the interstate for about 10 miles but I wasn't too fond of that and instead stayed on CR 139, although that meant I had to deal with about 12 miles of gravel. The gravel road was in great condition, so it was still a nice ride. In this moment I was again quite happy that I chose to get the wide tires for my bike. I really wouldn't have wanted to ride my bike on the interstate.

Today's route was not flat at all. Throughout the day I had to deal with a lot of up and down. The terrain after I left Bismarck was pretty hilly and stayed like this almost until I reached Hebron,ND. Although the route went parallel to the interstate, the interstate was still away far enough, so I didn't notice the interstate at all. All the way to Hebron, there was grassland and some farmland along the way. I really enjoyed the hilly terrain today, it was a nice change from the predominantly flat terrain in the last weeks.

Conclusion for the day:

Cycling on a gravel road can sometimes be the better choice.
